Right on the ocean, it has stunning views of the coast. Decor is sleek, contemporary Hawaiian, and the 243 rooms, suites, and villas, most of which have ocean views from balconies, are housed in low-rise bungalows that blend well with the setting. Fairmont Orchid overlooks Pauoa Bay from a beautifully landscaped 32-acre property on the Kohala Coast. The resort caters to honeymooners, as well as families, and has an on-site children's program for children between five and 12 years old, as well as babysitting services for a fee.

Escape the big resorts with a stay at Holualoa Inn, which is located just five miles from the city of Kailua-Kona and offers bed and breakfast on a 30-acre coffee plantation. Rooms and suites are colourful and many have ocean views. The suites are a good option if you are traveling with children, as they come with pull-out sofas. Children under 16 years old also stay for free.

Enjoy a bite to eat at the exclusive Meridia restaurant, which serves Mediterranean-inspired dishes with locally sourced ingredients. It is one of the three restaurants in the hotel. There is also an 18-hole golf course, infinity pool, hot tub, gym, beach access with sun loungers and umbrellas, and a spa. Beyond the rooms, amenities include several restaurants and three large pool areas, including one for adults only, along with boutique shops and a spa with separate saunas and hot tubs for men and women.

The resort has an old-time Hawaiian vibe that dates back to the 1930s. There is no restaurant on site, but there are plenty of options nearby. However, there are two swimming pools and hot tubs with Jacuzzi. In Kailua-Kona, within walking distance of several excellent restaurants, the Royal Kona Resort is one of the best 3-star hotels, especially for families.

Choose from rooms and suites, including connecting room options. The best rooms have ocean views. All have furnished balconies and refrigerators to keep drinks cold. That said, which hotels in Hawaii do you think are the best? In my rather limited experience, my favorite hotels in Hawaii so far, in no particular order, are the Westin Hapuna Beach, Andaz Maui and the Ritz-Carlton Residence Waikiki Beach.

I liked The Laylow Waikiki, although my last experience with them left a little to be desired. Rooms at Hyatt Centric Waikiki are also quite good, though general property amenities are missing. One of these days, I hope to experience the Four Seasons Oahu, as I loved the old JW Marriott Ihilani, but we'll see. One of Kauai's top luxury resorts, the 602-room Grand Hyatt Kauai attracts guests with spacious Hawaiiian-inspired rooms, three incredible pools, a gigantic saltwater lagoon, 10 dining options, including an abundance of high-end restaurants, a famous spa, a two-time luau week and impeccably maintained tropical gardens.

This 12-acre resort is built around a sprawling water park that features five swimming pools, grottoes, hot tubs, and even ponds where flamingos and ducks rest. With 40 acres of land, five golf courses, seven bars and restaurants, and a Japanese garden, this is the most incredible beach resort in the United States. Hawaii's landscapes encompass ethereal black and white sand beaches, inland rainforests, and active and inactive volcanoes. Built on Kalapaki Beach, the Marriott's 800-acre Kauai Resort is ideal for families and business travelers alike.

This is life on the Andaz Maui, the ocean is there to give you adventures whenever you want (snorkeling and surfing lessons are excellent), but the resort is also a sanctuary for a total of R&R. And most meals take place at Cane& Canoe, the resort's oceanfront restaurant that offers local seafood and Hawaiian cuisine. And as a resort guest, you'll get some really cool perks at the legendary Princeville Makai Golf Club, which is listed in America's Top 5 Golf Scenarios. This 840-acre spot is the only resort on Oahu's rugged North Shore, home to some of the best surfing spots in the world.

On Anaehoomalu Bay, on the Kohala Coast, Waikoloa Beach Marriott Resort and Spa is a large mid-range property set in lush tranquil grounds, where you'll find walking trails, fish-filled ponds, and two swimming pools. Guests can participate in a Hawaiian canoe experience, aerial silk yoga classes or kitesurf classes. Most of the resorts are located on the sunny coast of Kohala, which stretches along the northwest coast of the Big Island, starting north of Kona International Airport. The Grand Wailea competes with the Four Seasons for the title of Wailea's most luxurious resort, the planned and manicured resort on Maui's southwest coast.
